Technique Boards with Draw-Downs (oil paints)

Pears, Oil on panel, 10" x 8"

Whenever I start a new intro class of indirect painting, every student wants to immediately complete a stunning, multi-layered painting during the first class.  Instead, they diligently (and a little grumpily) begin by personally getting to know each color on their palette.

Each student creates their own Technique Board--a board where you discover the properties of the paint colors on your palette, and experiment with different techniques such as glazing and scumbling.

It's a little messy, and while it might not look like much, spending the time to REALLY get to know each color on your palette pays off big time in the long run.
