Introduction to Indirect Oil Painting
Level: Beginners to the Indirect method
Beginning students will learn the classical, academic methods of indirect oil painting. Indirect oil painting--an old master technique that dates to the Italian Renaissance--is a method of painting where multiple layers of thin, transparent glazes are used to achieve color. You will learn about materials, techniques, gray scales, color theory and color mixing, as well as composition and design.
To learn the colors in the palette, we start with technique boards and learn how to paint glazes. Your first painting is a simple sphere in gray scale then we move on to organic shapes in color such as floral still-lifes.
Students will receive step-by-step instruction for canvas preparation, composition, drawing, the "wipe-out" method, and layering paint in glazes.
You will select and paint an old master copy. Each class features instructor demonstrations, individual instruction, and group critiques.
